Cockroach Identification: The Five US Species to Scale

Quick answer

Five cockroach species account for almost all US structural infestations, and they range from 10 mm to 51 mm. Species matters more than size, because one female German cockroach and her offspring can produce over 30,000 individuals in a year, against roughly 800 for the American, 600 for the brown-banded and 200 for the Oriental. The German cockroach is also the one that lives in kitchens, cannot fly, and will not be cleared by a single treatment.

Roach identification usually stops at big or small, indoors or outdoors. That is a shame, because the five species differ in where they live in a building, whether they fly, and how fast they multiply, and each of those changes what happens next.

Published guides give these measurements, but almost always as separate photographs of individual specimens. Even UC IPM’s comparison tables, the best on the web, are labelled “photos not to scale”. Drawn against each other, the gap between a brown-banded and an American is nearly fivefold.

The identification card

Species Marker Flies? Where in the building
German Two dark parallel stripes running down the pronotum, the shield behind the head No, despite full wings Kitchens and bathrooms, near dishwashers, stoves and sinks. Warm, humid, close to food and water
Brown-banded Two pale bands across the abdomen; the only regularly banded structural species Males fly when disturbed, females cannot Warm, dry and high: upper cabinet walls, behind picture frames, inside clocks and light switch plates. Often nearer the ceiling than the floor
Oriental Very dark brown to nearly black with a greasy sheen No, and cannot climb smooth vertical surfaces Cool, dark and damp at or below ground level: basements, crawl spaces, floor drains, under sinks
Smokybrown Uniformly shiny dark brown with no pattern at all; wings extend past the abdomen in both sexes Yes, on warm humid evenings, and comes to lights Upper parts of buildings, attics, under shingles and siding; outdoors in mulch and woodpiles
American Reddish brown with a pale yellow band around the edge of the pronotum Yes, though rarely in northern areas Basements, crawl spaces, floor drains, sewers and steam tunnels; most common in commercial buildings

One correction worth making. The American cockroach’s marking is widely described as a yellowish figure eight. Every primary source we checked, including the University of Florida, Texas A&M, Penn State and UC IPM, describes it as a pale band around the margin of the pronotum rather than a figure eight. Look for the light edge, not the numeral.

Two everyday names also map onto this list. A “water bug” in most of the country is an Oriental cockroach, and a “palmetto bug” in the south is usually an American or a smokybrown.

Height in the building is a diagnostic

This is the fastest field triage, and it appears in no popular guide. Oriental cockroaches stay at or below ground level and are seldom found on upper floors or high in cupboards. Brown-banded cockroaches do the opposite, preferring warm dry spots high on walls and away from water. Smokybrowns occupy attics and the outside of the structure. Germans stay near the kitchen and bathroom plumbing.

So the answer to “which roach do I have” often follows from where it was found, before anyone looks at markings.

Why the species decides the outcome

Measured the same way for all four species, one female and her descendants produce over 30,000 individuals in a year for the German cockroach and roughly 200 for the Oriental. That difference is why the German cockroach is the species that defeats one-off treatment, and why professional programmes for it are built around repeated visits rather than a single application.

German cockroaches carry their egg case until shortly before hatching, which protects it, and they need very little space: adults prefer harbourage around 9.5 mm wide and nymphs can use a crack a millimetre and a half across. They can also survive about 42 days with water but no food, against 12 days with food but no water, which is why moisture control does more than cleaning alone.

Brown-banded cockroaches, by contrast, account for only about 1 per cent of indoor infestations, so a confident brown-banded identification usually means a smaller and more localised problem.

What the species changes in practice

  1. German: a kitchen and bathroom problem, treated as a sustained programme. Sanitation and moisture matter, and repeat visits are normal rather than a sign of failure.
  2. Oriental: a moisture and drainage problem at ground level. Fixing the damp and sealing the drains does more than spraying.
  3. Smokybrown and American: usually an outside-in problem. Mulch, woodpiles, soffits and drains are the source, and exclusion carries most of the weight.
  4. Brown-banded: check high and dry rather than under the sink, including furniture, appliances and picture frames.

How much treatment costs and how many visits a German infestation typically needs is covered in cockroach exterminator costs. The health angle, which is the strongest argument for treating German cockroaches promptly in a home with children, is in cockroach allergens and asthma. For sealing entry points and reducing harbourage, see pest-proofing your home, and for working out which pest you have at all, early signs of infestation.

Frequently asked questions

What are the different types of cockroaches in US homes?

Five species account for almost all structural infestations: German (13 to 16 mm), brown-banded (10 to 14 mm), Oriental (22 to 27 mm), smokybrown (32 to 38 mm) and American (38 to 51 mm). The German cockroach is the most common indoor species nationally.

What is the difference between a German and an American cockroach?

Size and location. The German is 13 to 16 mm with two dark stripes on the shield behind its head, does not fly, and lives in kitchens and bathrooms. The American is 38 to 51 mm, reddish brown with a pale band around the edge of that shield, can fly, and is most often found in basements, drains and commercial buildings.

Can cockroaches fly?

It depends on the species, and this is a useful field test. Smokybrown and American cockroaches fly, and male brown-banded cockroaches fly when disturbed. German cockroaches have full wings but do not fly, and Oriental cockroaches cannot fly at all, nor climb smooth vertical surfaces.

What is a water bug, and is it a cockroach?

In most of the United States, what people call a water bug is an Oriental cockroach: very dark, greasy-looking, flightless, and found in damp places at or below ground level such as basements, drains and crawl spaces.

What is a palmetto bug?

Usually an American or a smokybrown cockroach, the two large species common in the south. The smokybrown is uniformly shiny with no pattern; the American has a pale band around the edge of the pronotum.

Which cockroach is hardest to get rid of?

The German cockroach, by a wide margin. One female and her offspring can produce over 30,000 individuals in a year, against roughly 800 for the American and 200 for the Oriental. It also lives indoors year round and needs very little space, so repeat treatment is standard.

Does the American cockroach have a figure eight on its head?

Not according to the primary sources. University extension and federal descriptions consistently describe a pale yellow or brown band around the margin of the pronotum, the shield behind the head. The figure-eight description is common online but is not how entomologists describe the marking.

Where do cockroaches hide in a house?

It depends on the species, which is why identification helps. German cockroaches stay near kitchen and bathroom plumbing; Oriental cockroaches at or below ground level in damp areas; brown-banded high, warm and dry, including inside furniture and appliances; smokybrown in attics and the building exterior.
