Corrections Policy

We publish numbers for a living. Some of them will be wrong. This page sets out what we do about it.

How we correct

Corrections are made in place, on the page that carried the error, with a dated note at the foot of that page saying what was wrong and what it now says. We do not quietly edit a figure and leave the page looking untouched, and we do not delete a page to make an error disappear.

Where an error affected a headline figure, an index value or a conclusion, the note goes at the top of the page, not the foot.

What counts as an error

• A wrong figure. A number that does not match the primary source, or arithmetic we got wrong.
• A wrong basis. Attributing an occupation figure to an industry population, or pairing two datasets that do not describe the same thing. We treat these as seriously as a wrong figure, because they mislead further.
• A superseded figure. When an agency revises a dataset we have published from, we update and date the change. Revision is not the same as error and we label it as revision.
• A broken source link. If you cannot check our work, that is a defect.

What we will not do

We will not remove accurate, sourced information because a company objects to it. If a figure is right, it stays, and we will say what the source is. If you believe a figure is wrong, send the contradicting primary source and we will check it.

Reporting an error

Tell us the page, the specific figure, the figure you believe is correct and the primary source that supports it. See contact. Reports that identify a specific number and source get checked quickly. Reports that say a page is generally wrong take longer, because we have to guess what you mean.
