How to Cancel a Pest Control Contract

A federal FTC rule gives three business days to cancel a door-to-door signing. Beyond that, fees run $150 to $500 and are often negotiable.

A federal FTC rule gives you three business days to cancel any contract signed outside the seller’s normal place of business, which covers most door-to-door pest control sales. Beyond that window, early termination fees of $150 to $500 are common on annual agreements, and many contracts auto-renew unless you opt out 30 to 60 days before the renewal date. Fees are frequently negotiable.

Pest control is one of the few home services still sold heavily door to door, which makes the cooling-off rule unusually relevant here and almost never mentioned by the company selling the plan.

The three-day rule most people never hear about

The FTC’s cooling-off rule applies to contracts signed somewhere other than the seller’s normal place of business. A sales representative on your doorstep meets that description, as does a signing at a home show or a stall.

Within three business days you can cancel by sending written notice, and the right does not depend on the company agreeing. It depends on where the contract was signed. Send it in writing, keep proof of sending, and note the date.

Certain exclusions and state variations apply, so if a substantial sum is involved it is worth confirming the position for your state rather than relying on a general summary.

What cancellation costs after that window

Situation Typical position
Within 3 business days of a door-to-door signing Cancel in writing at no cost under the FTC rule
Annual agreement, mid-term, no cause Early termination fee commonly $150 to $500
Cancelling for service failure Grounds to cancel for cause; document everything
Approaching auto-renewal Opt out 30 to 60 days before the renewal date
Prepaid annual plan Refund of unused visits is a negotiated point

Termination fees are frequently negotiable. A company weighing a $200 fee against a poor review and a regulatory complaint often waives it, and asking costs nothing.

Cancelling for cause

If treatments were missed, activity continued despite the service, or a retreatment guarantee was not honoured, you may have grounds to cancel for cause rather than paying to exit.

That argument depends entirely on evidence, so assemble it before you make the call:

  1. Dated photographs of continuing activity.
  2. The service record for each visit, showing what was applied and where. Applicators generate these as a matter of course.
  3. Missed or rescheduled appointments, with dates.
  4. Your callback requests and what happened to them.
  5. The contract clause the company has not met, quoted.

One caveat worth being honest about. Continued sightings within the expected window are not service failure. Fleas run four to six weeks, cockroaches two to four across multiple visits, and a complaint at week two is usually premature. Our guide to how long treatment takes to work sets out realistic timelines, and preparation is the standard exclusion where it was not completed.

How to cancel properly

  1. Read the agreement first for notice period, renewal date, minimum term, prepaid services and termination fee.
  2. Diarise the renewal date minus the notice period, since 30 to 60 days is common and missing it renews the whole term.
  3. Send written notice, not a phone call, including your account number, service address and the date you want service to stop.
  4. Keep proof of sending and a copy of what you sent.
  5. Ask for written confirmation that the account is closed and no further billing will occur.
  6. Cancel any stored payment authority only after you have written confirmation, since stopping payment first can put you in breach.

Before you cancel, check what you are giving up

The callback provision is usually the most valuable term in a plan, and it disappears with the agreement. If the reason for cancelling is price rather than service, one-time treatment costs $100 to $300 per visit against $40 to $150 on a plan, so occasional callers can come out ahead and frequent callers rarely do. Our guide to pest control without a contract runs the comparison.

Termite bonds are the exception worth pausing on. Letting one lapse usually means reinstatement requires a new treatment rather than resuming payments, so the saving can be expensive. Our guide to termite bonds and warranties covers what voids them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel a pest control contract?

Read the agreement for notice period and renewal date, then send written notice with your account number, service address and requested stop date, keeping proof of sending. Request written confirmation the account is closed before cancelling any stored payment authority. Phone calls alone leave you without evidence.

Can I cancel a pest control contract signed at my door?

The FTC cooling-off rule gives three business days to cancel contracts signed outside the seller’s normal place of business, which covers door-to-door sales. Send written notice within that window and keep proof. Exclusions and state variations apply, so confirm the position locally where a substantial sum is involved.

What is the early termination fee for pest control?

Commonly $150 to $500 on annual agreements. Fees are frequently negotiable, since a company weighing a $200 charge against a poor review and a regulatory complaint often waives it. Where you have grounds to cancel for cause, such as missed treatments or an unhonoured guarantee, document it first.

Do pest control contracts auto-renew?

Many do, typically for another full term unless you opt out 30 to 60 days before the renewal date. Diarise the renewal date minus the notice period when you sign, because missing that window commits you to another term regardless of whether you intended to continue.
